Original Church
The original church was of stucco and wood frame construction built in two months over the summer of 1929. It was built using day laborers, most of whom were new St. Catherine Parishioners. In his notes, Fr. Beglin regrets having it "built as a temporary chapel," and wishes it were not stucco. The cost of the building was less than $10,000. It originally had no heat and no electricity. It was formally opened with a high Mass with Bishop O'Dea on October 27, 1929. The next day, Black Monday, marked the beginning of the stock market crash of 1929.
