We will be working with the St. Bernard Project and former parishioner Sr. Judy Zynda.
The St. Bernard Project is a grassroots nonprofit rebuilding organization whose mission is to remove barriers for families who want to return home. Watch the Volunteer Video here:
St. Bernard Project Volunteer Video
- 100% of the homes in St. Bernard Parish were rendered uninhabitable
- St. Bernard had standing water of 4 to 20 feet for up to 4 weeks
- Homes, clothes, furniture, pictures, keepsakes, cars and tools were destroyed
- Only one-third of residents have been able to move back, with the vast majority of returned residents still living in FEMA trailers or attics that were above the waterline
- Just one-third of the businesses have been able to re-open
As of October 2009, more than 17,000 volunteers have helped St. Bernard Project rebuild 250 families’ homes. It’s an impressive amount of volunteers, yet the need is still great in St. Bernard Parish. Thousands of families still struggle to get back into their homes.
Cost: The estimated cost is $650 per person. This includes: airfare, transportation, food, and lodging. We will be fundraising as a group and will provide assistance on a need based scale. Fundraising efforts will include a New Orleans style dinner, and other projects.
Housing: We have reserved housing at a Catholic Retreat center situated on the outskirts of the French Quarter.
How much of an impact can one volunteer make?
In one day a St. Bernard Project volunteer without previous construction experience can
- Spackle/mud in several rooms
- Install a new floor
- Paint a small house
