18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Five Loaves and Two Fishes

In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus takes five loaves and two fish from his disciples and uses it to feed 5,000 people. The disciples acted with faith by giving what little they had. In return, they got to witness and take part in a great miracle.

It is amazing to imagine how five loaves and two fish can feed thousands. It’s also interesting to imagine the experience of the disciples who had to give up their food. They were probably hungry from their journey. What was it like for them to give up what little food they had so that Jesus could feed the crowd?

It helps to know that Jesus was no stranger to these disciples. They had been following him and they trusted him because they knew of his great power as well as his great love.
Because they knew and trusted Jesus, they had faith he would provide for them. And indeed, “they all ate and were satisfied.” (Mt 14:20)

Take time to read and reflect on the Scriptures for this Sunday.

Don’t have access to a Bible?

Visit www.usccb.org/bible/readings or download an app such as Laudate or iBreviary to access the Mass readings.

Isaiah 55:1-3
Heed me, and you shall eat well...listen, that you may have life.

Psalm 145:8-9, 15-16, 17-18
The hand of the Lord feeds us.

Romans 8:35, 37-39
Nothing can separate us from the love of God.

Matthew 14:13-21
Jesus feeds the multitudes with five loaves and two fish

Call to Action

COVID-19 has contributed to the permanent closure of 130 Catholic schools across 23 states. Additionally, internal surveys show ten percent of Catholic schools are now uncertain if they can open their doors this fall. That means as many as 500 or more Catholic schools could be in jeopardy.

Please join the USCCB in asking Congress to include additional relief for Catholic schools in the next emergency relief package.

Public schools are asking for $300 billion dollars, and it is important to make sure that hard-hit Catholic school families also receive emergency relief.  Please take a moment to contact your Members of Congress to ask for emergency aid to Catholic schools and hard-hit families in the next COVID-19 relief package.  We are asking Congress for direct funding to families for education expenses, including Catholic school tuition.

We encourage you to add your own personal story about your Catholic school experience in the message as well.

Catholic schools urgently need help in this time of uncertainty.  Please contact your members of Congress today!

“Respect and love ought to be extended also to those who think or act differently than we do in social, political and even religious matters.” “If we want people running for elected office to behave better, we have to start with behaving better with people we encounter who hold differing opinions than our own.”

RESOURCES AND INFORMATION

Divine Mercy

In the Second Greatest Story Ever Told

A Virtual Retreat with Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC

Father Michael Gaitley, MIC, is director of Evangelization for the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception and director of Formation for the Marian Missionaries of Divine Mercy.

In partnership with the Augustine Institute, Fr. Gaitley has produced a beautiful 10 part series, titled Divine Mercy: In The Second Greatest Story Ever Told, tracing God's story of mercy across the ages.

The series tells the dramatic history of God's love and mercy as interwoven through the transformative message of St. Faustina, the miraculous appearance of Mary at Fatima, the witness of Maximilian Kolbe, and the world-changing papacy of Pope St. John Paul II.

The Archbishop Brunett Retreat Center is excited to transform this high-quality series into a virtual retreat. The retreat will be free to anyone with access to FORMED through their parish.

To register:
1. CLICK HERE to register now!  We will send you an example retreat schedule that you can follow or make your own, and a study guide with reflection questions for each presentation.  Since St. Catherine has our own subscription, after registering, then go to step two.
